Rehabilitation Hub – Burundi
Giving children a second chance to walk.
In 2015 we launched and continue to support a Rehabilitation Centre in the remote and impoverished Bubanza province of Burundi. AIM worked together on the project with the International Foundation of Doctors for Central Africa (FIMAC).
The centre, which helps people with physical disabilities and those suffering from post-traumatic treatment, provides post-surgical rehabilitation and is named in honour of AIM Group founder, Enzo Buongiorno.
Since its foundation, the centre has treated hundreds of patients, most of them under 5 years old, giving them the opportunity to walk again.
Patients are treated for handicaps linked to physical impairments such as instability of the bones, joints or muscles, which lead to substantial restriction of movement. Some common conditions giving rise to motor disabilities are poliomyelitis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophies, amputation, fractures, or injuries of spine, head, soft tissues, etc.
Recurring missions to Burundi, have enabled us to follow the progress of the local physiotherapy team , which deals with the rehabilitation of children.
