ECCV 2024: A MILESTONE IN SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATION AND SUSTAINABILITY
The 18th European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV 2024) in Milan has cemented its reputation as one of the world’s leading events in computer vision and machine learning. Organised by the European Computer Vision Association (ECVA), this biennial event, which first took place in Antibes, France in 1990, continues to be an important platform for researchers, industry leaders and academics to exchange cutting-edge ideas and innovations. AIM Group International organised the event as a full PCO for the first time.
This year’s conference set new records with an impressive attendance of 6,789 delegates from 77 countries – a 58% increase on the previous edition in 2022. While the majority of attendees were from Europe, Asia and North America were also well represented, underlining the global appeal of ECCV. The increase in attendance consistently exceeded expectations and was attributed not only to the allure of Milan and Italy, but also to the rapidly evolving advances in the sector (including the adoption of AI) that are driving professionals to collaborate and share their work in person.
Despite the focus on face-to-face participation, ECCV 2024 remained inclusive by offering a virtual component. A total of 252 attendees participated remotely, accessing keynote speeches and presentations online. To further ensure accessibility, travel grants were provided to participants from low-income countries or those facing financial hardship, demonstrating the conference’s commitment to promoting diverse participation.
A HUB FOR GROUNDBREAKING SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS
At the heart of ECCV 2024 was the scientific programme, which attracted an overwhelming 8,585 paper submissions. Of these, 2,387 papers were selected for presentation in an extensive poster area divided into seven sessions. Attendees were able to explore these contributions in depth, as the posters remained on display for half a day each. Meanwhile, around 200 of these papers were spotlighted in rapid oral presentations, giving authors the opportunity to present their work concisely to an engaged audience.
The event also featured 82 workshops & tutorials with +480 participants – a 68% increase on 2022 – covering a wide range of topics, from AI and machine learning to robotics and automation. Industry demonstrations showcased advanced AI-powered tools, giving attendees a glimpse into the future of technology. Distinguished keynotes, expert tutorials – including an innovative format such as speed dating involving professors and students – and exhibitions enriched the programme, making ECCV 2024 a pivotal moment for the field.
The vibrant and dynamic environment fostered innovation and collaboration, reinforcing ECCV’s status as a premier venue for scientific exchange. The conference concluded with a grand closing party attended by over 3,000 people, celebrating the joy and value of coming together in person after a period marked by virtual events.
ECCV 2024: LEADING THE WAY IN SUSTAINABLE CONFERENCES
In addition to its scientific achievements, ECCV 2024 made strides in setting new standards for sustainability in large-scale events. The conference was managed in accordance with ISO 20121 certification, ensuring that every aspect of the event reflected a commitment to environmental responsibility and social sustainability.
Working with AIM Group International, the organising team adopted a number of sustainable practices:
- The conference venue, Allianz MiCo, was chosen not only for its state-of-the-art facilities, but also for its alignment with ECCV’s sustainability goals. The venue boasted energy-efficient infrastructure and reusable materials, including eco-friendly booth construction.
- Catering was provided by local, organic and sustainable suppliers, with menus designed to reduce environmental impact by prioritising seasonal and locally sourced food; also, the catering materials used during the event were compostable or sourced from eco-friendly providers. Leftover food from the conference was donated to charities in Milan through the Food for Good programme, ensuring that nothing went to waste.
- ECCV 2024 also reduced its reliance on printed materials by offering digital alternatives wherever possible. Conference programmes, certificates of attendance and updates were available via a mobile app, limiting the need for paper.
- The use of recycled materials extended to the conference lanyards, which were made from recycled polyester.
- Delegates were encouraged to use public transport, with the venue conveniently located close to metro lines.
- A major focus of ECCV 2024 was to engage and support the next generation of researchers. Initiatives such as a mentoring programme, a doctoral consortium, travel support and a volunteering programme were put in place to ensure the active involvement of young researchers, reinforcing the idea that they are the future of the field.
A BLUEPRINT FOR FUTURE CONFERENCES
In addition to serving as a hub for sharing world-class research in computer vision and AI, ECCV 2024 demonstrated that major conferences can prioritise sustainability without compromising the quality of the experience.
