Innovation meets sustainability at the 9th San Raffaele OCT & RETINA Forum
The 9th edition of the San Raffaele OCT & RETINA Forum once again brought together leading ophthalmologists and retinal specialists from around the world in Milan to explore the latest advances in imaging technologies and therapeutic approaches for retinal diseases. Organised by AIM Group International, the event took place on 13-14 March at the NHOW Hotel (Via Tortona).
Over two days, more than 450 attendees participated in a rich scientific programme with over 60 expert faculty and cutting-edge sessions focusing on OCT, OCTA, ultra-widefield imaging, clinical trials and the latest drugs and laser treatments. Designed to foster both learning and community, the Forum also provided a unique platform for residents and fellows to present real clinical cases, mentored by top international experts, in a dedicated session curated by Prof Bandello and Prof Querques.
But what really set this year’s Forum apart was its commitment to sustainability – not just environmental, but deeply human.
In line with AIM Group’s growing focus on sustainable events, the OCT & RETINA Forum integrated several initiatives to support both people and the planet.
Once again, the congress supported SAMOT, a women-led association based in Nepal that empowers local women through employment. The Congress rucksack distributed to delegates was made by these artisans and featured a unique design inspired by the iconic Mirò logo that has been associated with the Forum for years. A special video was shown at the opening session, giving participants an insight into the story behind their congress bags.
Sustainability also extended to practical actions: badges were collected for reuse and the popular “Stay Healthy & Fit” programme returned, this time with a focus on eye wellness. Sponsored by a partner company, the campaign included:
– 7 Tips for Healthy Eyes displayed on floor stickers and banners throughout the venue – Distribution of almonds in sustainable paper bags at the sponsor’s booth, highlighting the benefits of diet for eye health – Encouragement to take the stairs rather than the lifts, reinforced with playful, motivational floor stickers
– The Exhibitor Tour Guide Challenge, a gamified initiative that drove foot traffic through the show floor and incentivised visits to at least 11 of the 24 stands, with a prize draw at the end – an initiative welcomed by exhibitors and attendees alike.
While the congress focused heavily on advancing clinical practice through innovative imaging and therapies, it also emphasised human connection. A new AI-powered photo booth, also sponsored, added a fun and light-hearted touch to the event, offering attendees a moment of levity in the midst of a packed scientific programme.
With 431 attendees, 63 faculty members and 117 sponsor representatives, the 9th OCT & RETINA Forum once again proved to be more than a scientific congress. It was a space where knowledge, technology, community and social responsibility intersected – paving the way for a more sustainable and inclusive future in ophthalmology.
